PHP Engineer (Vanilla PHP / Payments)

We are looking for a PHP Engineer to join the team at a dynamic payments company. This team handles processor integrations, transactions, and core payment functionality, specifically for online payments where the card isn’t physically present.
Your workflow will be highly focused: approximately 90% dedicated to backend development and 10% to occasional frontend tasks, with active daily collaboration.
Important: the team works in vanilla PHP without a framework. Framework background is fine, but comfort working without one is required.

Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain scalable backend payment processing functionality using vanilla PHP.
- Implement and manage processor integrations to smoothly handle complex online transaction flows.
- Work on sprint tickets, troubleshoot issues, and ensure system reliability.
- Leverage AI coding tools (such as Claude Code) to streamline development and enhance code efficiency.
- Participate actively in code reviews, daily stand-ups, and architectural discussions.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and team members via Slack.
- Pitch in with occasional frontend tasks (roughly 10% of your time) when needed.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with PHP, with a strong focus on vanilla PHP, you should be fully comfortable working without a framework on a daily basis.
- A solid background in backend development as your primary engineering focus (90% of time).
- Upper-Intermediate or higher English level for seamless daily communication with the team.
- Nice to have:Experience in the payments, fintech, or e-commerce domains. Basic frontend skills (JavaScript, HTML/CSS) for occasional frontend tasks. Experience using AI coding assistants (like Claude Code) in your daily workflow. Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development environments.
